2013 Rex Morgan Award

On Wednesday, November 20th 2013 the Scientific and Cultural Facilities District will host the Rex Morgan Awards in Ponti Hall at the Denver Art Museum honoring nominees and award recipient Rita Flores de Wallace.  Enjoy performances by the Martin Gilmore Trio of Swallow Hill Music, Mudra Dance, and a Traditional Chinese Lion Dance performed by Shaolin Hung Mei Kung Fu.

Recipients of the Rex Morgan award follow in the footsteps of Mr. Rex Morgan who pursued a regional vision, SCFD, to create a thriving cultural community for all citizens. Recipients are leaders within the District who have advocated on behalf of the cultural community, demonstrated vision and persistence in pursuing goals to benefit the cultural community, promoted community participation in pursing cultural objectives, worked as a volunteer supporting cultural initiatives or institutions, acted to benefit a municipality or county region, initiated, collaborated, or supported innovative policies to enhance the regional cultural community.

The 2013 Rex Morgan Award will be bestowed on Rita Flores de Wallace.  Since coming to Denver in the late 1970's with husband John Wallace, Rita has graciously given her cultural talents to artists, organizations and community of the Denver/metro region.  She freely shares her extensive knowledge of tarditional Mexican folklorico, arts and crafts, collaborating and assisting with art exhibits, school outreach programs, dance presentations, and museum tours and functioning as a connector and cultural ambassador. Clara Ricciardi of the Denver Art Museum describes Rita as “an exceptional teacher of the folk arts from Mexico and has proven to be an invaluable resource with her extensive knowledge of Mexican traditions, arts, and culture”.

The list of organizations that have benefited from Rita’s knowledge is long and prestigious: The Denver Art Museum, the Chicano Humanities and Arts Council, Fiesta Colorado, Museo de las Americas, the University of Denver, the Mexican Consulate, and the Denver Museum of Nature and Science just to name a few.  Rita we thank you for your contributions to the community and look forward to a celebration in your honor.
