Donation to the Denver Art Museum that puts Denver on the Map

Megan Garn | 2014-01-14

The Denver Art Museum just announced that it has received their largest donation ever today, from a man named Frederic C. Hamilton.

Hamilton, a pioneer in America’s oil industry in the late 1960s, not only serves as Chairman of the Hamilton Companies he helped create, but also serves as the current Chairman Emeritus of the Denver Art Museum Board of Trustees.

Hamilton has been an active member of the Board of Trustees of the Denver Art Museum since 1977. This time though, his donation is a little more than just his time and his assistance in fundraising. Much more.

Known to have a large personal collection of art work, a collection made up primarily of impressionist masterpieces, including pieces painted by the renowned Claude Monet and Vincent Van Gogh. Hamilton is generously donating his collection to the Denver Art Museum, twenty-two Impressionist master pieces that are reported to be worth over $100-million-dollars.

This is huge news for the Denver Art Museum and the people of Denver. Normally you would have to buy a plane ticket to Paris to see a Monet or Van Gogh in person (and let’s just say, textbooks don’t do the artwork justice), but we now have the opportunity to even take the free 16th Street shuttle to see them.

These paintings are not only rare, but have also never been shown in public before. No longer hidden from the public, we have the opportunity to learn from them and have a larger and more diverse audience experience the exquisiteness of these impressionist pieces.

While the collection will become part of the Museum’s permanent collection when Hamilton passes, now is the time to see these rare pieces of art before they are shown elsewhere.

The collection is on display at the Denver Art Museum until February 9th.
