Seven Counties of Impact

2014-06-10

SCFD mapThe SCFD funds nonprofit organizations and agencies of local government that provide cultural benefit to the Denver Metro Area residents. SCFD was approved by voters (and reauthorized twice!) due to the positive cultural impact it provides metro residents. The SCFD spans a seven county region, including Adams, Arapahoe, Boulder, Broomfield, Denver, Douglas and Jefferson counties. Although, voters in the cities of Castle Rock and Larkspur (Douglas County) have chosen not to be part of SCFD. Covering 4,542 square miles the SCFD District is larger than the States of Rhode Island and Delaware combined!

In addition to funding the larger museums, the zoo, botanic gardens, and performing arts organizations SCFD also annually funds approximately 250 local grassroot cultural organizations. This funding process takes place at each individual County; funds are divided up by commissioner/city council appointed County Cultural Councils. This local conrtol aspect is a key component of the collaborative success of SCFD. It ensures that arts, culture, and science are in all communities of the SCFD and that all citizens benefit from their investment. Citizens have the opportunity to experience everything from big broadway theatre productions to local community theatre.

SCFD fosters a collaborative spirit by having as its primarily goal the benefit of the public. Unlike other cities where cultural organizations see themselves as competition, Denver cultural organization are much more inclined to leverage their resources and team up to deliver better programming for residents.  It’s pretty amazing to live in such a culturally rich community!
