Chihuly Glass in the Gardens

2014-06-16

Chihuly at Denver Botanic GardensAfter more than three years of planning, this weekend the Denver Botanic Gardens opens its outdoor exhibition of glass artwork by Dale Chihuly, June 14th. Chihuly is one of the most well known artists in glass sculpting. He has had exhibits all over the world, ranging in size and form, his artwork will certainly bring some bold colors and drama to the Botanic Gardens. The sculptures are created from blown glass, a technique that involves inflating molten glassinto a bubble , with the aid of ablowpipe. You think glass blowing is difficult? Try moving it.

The exhibit is coming all the way from Tacoma, Washington. Only a 1,300 mile trip for thousands of glass pieces wrapped in foam that will then be reassembled in the Botanic Gardens. The boxes, along with armatures, hardware and tools, fill six 53-foot tractor trailers, stretching about the length of a football field. Then a lengthy installation process ensues, a team of 11 Chihuly Studio employees, who will spend 17 days installing the exhibition, trying to not to drop a single piece.

This is especially exciting for Denver, Chihuly studio usually mounts two major exhibitions a year! The Chihuly exhibition at the Denver Botanic Gardens will be showing until November 30, 2014. For more information and tickets visit the Botanic Gardens website:
