POSITION PURPOSE:

As a part of the Learning and Engagement Department, the Associate Director of Youth and Community Engagement is responsible for visioning and implementing strategies for engaging youth, families, and the educators who care for them. They oversee key initiatives that foster family participation both in museum and in community; direct programs that enhance and expand museum services to the school and teacher community of Denver and the region; and brings the joy of learning and connecting to art and creativity to youth in Denver. Through management of programs, mentorship of staff, and cross-departmental work this individual contributes to the advancement of the museums efforts to be a place that inspires, creates connections, and is enjoyable to all. A successful candidate will be someone who has worked in the arts, education and/or community engagement sector and is passionate about connecting youth, families, and educators with art, creativity, and museum experiences.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES (items which constitute approximately 80% of responsibilities)

  • Envision program directions and community partnerships to engage youth, families, and educators at the museum and in the community. This includes but not limited to:
  • Work alongside Family Programs staff to develop and implement experiences that engage kids and their grown-ups and are inclusive of Denvers diverse communities.
  • Strategize how best to introduce families to the museum through school programs and community collaborations.
  • Ensure strong revenue generation through paid experiences for young people.
  • Set direction for school and teacher programs that support student and teacher use of the Denver Art Museum and the collections.
  • Work with school programs staff to strategize school field trip experience programs, and support staff in development of experiences that foster critical thinking, global understanding and creativity.
  • Envision best practices for recruiting, training, and managing volunteer teachers in support of inclusive school experiences.
  • Work with the team to implement professional growth opportunities and resources for teachers including oversight of the Museums hub for curriculum and youth resources, Creativity Resource.
  • Identify future at- museum group programming directions, including summer community camp group experiences, possible homeschool programs and programs targeting early childhood communities.
  • Evaluate and assess the above.
  • Provide strategic direction for at-museum Community Spotlight program (at Museum community exhibition program) including receptions that celebrate student achievement while introducing families to the museum.
  • Direct in-community programs that introduce the DAM as a place that supports youth, teachers, and students.
    • Work with School and Community Programs staff to ensure successful implementation of Art Lives Here and subsequent community engagement programs.
    • Work with team to implement Family Art Social and subsequent programs.
    • Work to build strategic networks and connections to support success of youth initiatives and act as a museum spokesperson in the community.
    • Maintain strong relationships with leaders in the educational field on the school, district, and state level (including the Colorado Department of Education) in order to support teachers and school communities both at the DAM and in the community.
    • Forge strategic partnerships with community-based organizations, (schools, community centers, etc.) serving teachers, students, and their families to support the growth of in-museum and in-community school, youth, and family programs and inform how on-site programming can become more responsive to Metro Denvers communities.
    • Maintain exceptional quality of Learning & Engagements family, school and educator programs.
    • Foster a culture of reflection, collaboration, experimentation, and innovation among team members to ensure implementation of best practices for youth, family, and educator engagement.
    • Lead the development of staffing models for facilitating programs in museum and in community.
    • Work with managers to develop/mentor newer staff; perform annual performance appraisals.
    • Manage budget and planning for this area.
    • Track program statistics to make strategic decisions.
    • Work with the Marketing and Communications Departments to identify opportunities and develop communications and marketing strategies for families, schools, and teachers.

Serve as a member of the L&E leadership team, working closely with Chief and other division heads to foster collegial interdepartmental work and develop efficient workflow systems. Participate in overall Learning & Engagement Department planning and budgeting activities

Manage grants related to youth, family, and teacher engagement program areas. Assist with donor stewardship, manage budgets, and successful grant completion.

Serve as Learning & Engagement representative on museum-wide committees as assigned.

Share model initiatives with field to maintain DAMs national reputation and position the museum well for competitive national grants.

Collect and analyze information available on programming initiatives and their impact and engaged audiences; Utilize information to set strategic direction for program areas, and prepare reports as needed for trustees, administrators, funders, etc.
