Title: Bilingual Classroom Outreach Instructor

Reports to: Director of Education, Education Outreach Manager

Summary: Responsible for the planning and execution of educational programming and outreach at schools, libraries, community centers, and events around the Denver metro area including at FAN EXPO Denver. This role will also help translate curriculum into Spanish and teach in bilingual settings.

Compensation and benefits: starting at $30-$40 per hour plus travel

Hourly Expectation: 5-10 hours per month (varies depending on availability and time of year)

Description: Pop Culture Classroom (PCC) is a Denver-based education nonprofit with a mission to inspire a love of learning, increase literacy, celebrate diversity, and build community through the tools of popular culture and the power of self-expression. PCC accomplishes this by creating free resources and providing professional development for educators, as well as enacting pop culture-based educational programs for youth and families at schools, libraries, community centers, and events.

We are currently adding members to our team of qualified art, media, and literacy instructors to continue building on our mission. In an effort to make our workshops more accessible to various demographics, PCC is seeking a bilingual instructor to assist in planning and implementation of our curriculum in English and Spanish speaking settings. Our ideal candidate is someone with a background in creating pop culture (comics, gaming, art, film, podcasts, streaming video, etc.), who is fluent in English and Spanish, and who is excited to join a vibrant and diverse educational community, work with various demographics (including those that are underserved and at-risk) and build one-of-a-kind learning experiences for students of all ages.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Works with Education Outreach Manager and Director of Education to successfully plan and execute outreach workshops.
  • Collaborate with fellow instructors and PCC staff to develop lesson plans, coordinate supplies, and set clear learning goals for students.
  • Communicate with site coordinators and PCC staff to coordinate workshop logistics and address needs/concerns as they arise.
  • Manage learning spaces to create positive, healthy, and safe learning environments for all regardless of age, background, race, ability, etc.
  • Learn and instruct PCC’s comic book-creation curriculum, Storytelling Through Comics.
  • Learn and instruct PCC’s tabletop game design curriculum, Game On!
  • As needed, translate PCC’s curriculum into Spanish
  • Work with Education Outreach manager to discuss language needs of workshops in need of bilingual instructors
  • Instruct workshops in Spanish-speaking or bilingual environments.
  • Be familiar with PCC evaluation and assessment tools, striving for proficiency in all areas
  • Keep and submit logs for hourly payment and mileage reimbursement.
  • Arrive to workshops early, well-prepared, and familiar with the day’s lesson.
  • Hold students accountable to high behavioral and academic expectations.
  • Be willing to receive feedback and attend professional development as needed.
  • Be flexible for all classrooms and age levels as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 Required Qualifications:

  • Written and verbal fluency in English and Spanish
  • Ability to creatively solve problems on the spot
  • Compassionate and clear communication skills
  • Excellent, detail-oriented planning and organizational skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills, interpersonal skills, and workshop teaching skills that support social and emotional development.
  • Ability to relate authentically to youth of all ages
  • Demonstrated leadership, reliability, stability, and responsibility
  • Ability to travel to and from workshops as needed
  • Comfortable carrying materials (up to 30 pounds) to and from workshops
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation
  • Flexibility in work hours
  • Experience with contemporary pop culture
  • Demonstrated skills in creating pop culture media (Digital or physical art, video games, board games, comics, podcasts, digital video, cosplay, coding, creative writing, etc.)
  • Demonstrated experience working with youth and families

Desired Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher
  • Certificate of Translation
  • Experience teaching in a classroom setting (K-12 preferred)
  • Experience with utilization of pop culture as an educational tool
  • Ability to work during the school day (10 am – 5pm)
