Denver Botanic Gardens is currently seeking a Full Time Botany Manager in our Research & Conservation Department! Read below to see if the requirements might be a good fit for you:

Position Summary

This position is responsible for managing seed collections in support of the Wyoming BLM Seeds of Success program. This work will include managing a team of six people (two field crews each with three people). The Botany Team Manager will be responsible for coordinating all field plans and logistics with the BLM. Responsibilities will include developing species lists for collections and obtaining appropriate information on phenology and collection locations. The Manager will be responsible for training field crews in proper techniques and making sure all collections are sufficient in quality and quantity to meet contractual needs. This position will require occasional field work, but will mostly be located in our Denver office.

This position is a term position that is grant funded for 12 months, and is eligible to participate in the Gardens Health and Welfare and Retirement Plans per plan guidelines.


General Duties and Responsibilities

  • Oversees processing of specimens including but not limited to processing incoming material and assessing quality.
  • Leading and motivating a team of people.
  • Coordinates the activities of botany field crews and oversees day-to-day activities in the field and lab.
  • Develops all field plans, including travel, phenology, access, and species priorities.
  • Communicates weekly with BLM liaison on status of work.
  • Trains field crews in proper SOS collection methods.
  • Coordinates and supervises quality control inspections of collections of seeds and vouchers.
  • Maintains satisfactory working relationships with managers, co-workers and others.
  • Maintains a positive, helpful, and solution-oriented demeanor.
  • Regular attendance at the worksite may be required. As with all positions at Denver Botanic Gardens, the incumbent must be in good performance standing to be eligible for remote work. Remote work is at the discretion of management at all times.

Position Qualifications: Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of proper processes and procedures in a laboratory environment.
  • Extensive field experience required.
  • Ability to effectively lead team.
  • Prior knowledge of collection management process and database management.
  • Ability to read and interpret scientific data.
  • Plant identification skills required.
  • Experience with seed collections, specifically Seeds of Success protocols preferred.
  • Experience making plant voucher collections.
  • Must have proven excellent customer service, interpersonal, and communication skills in dealing with the public.
  • Ability to maintain stability under pressure and able to deal well with stressful situations.
  • Ability to be flexible and willing to modify plans when necessary, throughout the day.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends and/or holidays.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Suite products, specifically Word, Excel and Outlook and Teams.
  • Ability to work overtime as necessary.
  • Must be a positive representative of the Gardens both internally and externally at all times.
  • Must work with respect and cooperation at all times with fellow employees and the public.
  • Must be committed to working safely at all times.


  • At least two years of experience in the field of botany, taxonomy, biology, ecology, environmental sciences or related area or equivalent; or Bachelor’s or Master’s degree with related experience and/or training or equivalent combination of experience and education.
  • Must have training conducting field collections of plant vouchers and/or seeds.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience in a field setting preferred.
  • Position requires a valid driver’s license.


This is a primarily on-site position. Travel to field sites with the field team will be required a few times during the field season.
