QUALIFICATIONS:
The ideal Children’s Chorale Piccolini Director candidate will possess these qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Music Education and/or significant experience in childhood music education.
- Passion for working with children and strong belief in and understanding of the benefits of performance-based music education.
- Knowledge of choral techniques, vocal pedagogy, and a broad range of choral repertoire for primary aged students.
- Knowledge and/or training in Kodaly, Orff, and/or Dalcroze Methodologies.
- Commitment to diversity, equality, inclusion and access – in practice and repertoire selection
- Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work as a member of a team.
COMPENSATION AND HOURS:
This is a part-time hourly position which we anticipate will require 20 hours per month from August through May. Pay ranges from $24—28 per hour, based upon experience and education. No benefits are provided.
Hours will be flexible, but must accommodate:
- Regular rehearsals on Thursday (and likely Tuesday) afternoon
- Concerts: October 3rd, December 14th and 15th, April 18th

SUMMARY:
The Piccolini Director works under the guidance of the Boulder Children’s Chorale Artistic Director. The director is accountable for the selection of music and providing instruction for developing children’s vocal and music skills and is responsible for rehearsals and performances of their assigned choir(s).
Regular rehearsals are held on Tuesday afternoons in Longmont and Thursday afternoons in Boulder.
Piccolini is our introductory ensemble, and consists of students between the grades of Kindergarten-1st.
The Children’s Choir Director reports to the Children’s Chorale Artistic Director on all artistic issues and to the Board of Directors on administrative, organizational, and outreach activities.
BACKGROUND:
Founded in 1965, the Boulder Chorale is the region’s oldest and largest choral organization. Our mission is to enrich and inspire a broad community through music. Our organization serves a multigenerational group of over 200 members, ranging in age from 5-85 and spanning across 6 different choirs. The Boulder Chorale is a community of individuals who love to sing, love to educate, love to be challenged by new and diverse repertoire, and love to perform in a variety of settings.
The Boulder Children’s Chorale consists of 4 choirs (2 training choirs and 2 auditioned ensembles) which bridge the range of child development from early elementary to high school and focus on education/healthy vocal growth, community and quality performances.
There are also 2 auditioned adult choirs – the Concert Chorale and the Chamber Chorale. These choirs are led by the Boulder Chorale Artistic Director. Both the adult and children’s choirs offer their own season programming and collaborate annually on a holiday concert that has become a beloved tradition in the community.
AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY:
Repertoire Selection and Rehearsal Planning
- Selects rehearsal and performance repertoire suitable for children’s voices and appropriate for training in choral singing.
- Keeps current with new choral repertoire and techniques.
- Analyzes scores, prepares choral markings, and studies background information of repertoire as needed.
- Provides instruction and develops the vocal ensemble skills of young singers.
- Plans and executes regular weekly rehearsals of their assigned ensemble, including the fall Day Camp.
- Provides all music, materials, and instructions necessary for the accompanist of their ensemble.
Performance Preparation
- Collaborates with Children’s Chorale AD on season programming and concert-related logistics as needed.
- Communicates and collaborates with Boulder Chorale AD in decisions regarding joint performances with the Concert and Chamber Chorale.
- Provides program information, translations, and notes as needed.
- Conducts all dress rehearsals and performances of their assigned ensemble.
Membership Communication
- Recruits students of all backgrounds for their assigned ensemble.
- Communicates regularly with Boulder Children’s Chorale Manager on information to be included for their assigned ensemble in weekly e-announcements.
- Communicates regularly and clearly with families of singers on home practice, rehearsal, and performance expectations.
- Posts home practice audio files or other practice materials as needed.
- Confers with parents/ caregivers regarding student progress and any disciplinary issues, involving Children’s Chorale AD’s as needed.
Outreach and Strategic Planning
- Represents the Children’s Chorale at various community and cultural events.
- Works closely with Boulder Children’s Chorale AD to ensure continued effectiveness and development of the Children’s Chorale, including providing input on policies, procedures, and potential outreach opportunities.
- Assists with educational camps, outreach events, and artistic collaborations as needed.
- Directs rehearsals and attends tours of their assigned ensemble.
- Participates in semi-annual mission, vision, and strategic development discussions with the Boulder Chorale Board, Chorale Managers, Boulder Children’s Chorale AD, Boulder Chorale AD, and staff as requested.
