About our Future Controller: The ideal candidate for Butterfly Pavilion’s controller position is an established and ambitious nonprofit leader who has an entrepreneurial spirit and can support Butterfly Pavilion’s vision in evolving the organization into a world-class center for invertebrate education, research, and conservation. This person is a strategic and analytical thinker with an eye for detail and a commitment to the long-term financial sustainability of the organization as it enters a period of substantial growth. They play an instrumental part in leading organizational growth and mission fulfillment, ensuring that revenue forecasts accurately guide decision-making, and that expense management aligns with the fiscal plan. They are a methodical data analyst, enthusiastic and ambitious, demonstrate superior communication skills, and can convey financial information to various stakeholders with differing levels of financial acumen.

Position Summary: The controller is responsible for and directs all financial functions, including financial planning and reporting, budgets, forecasting, investments, risk management, and loss control. This position also oversees all IT across the organization. The controller is a member of the executive leadership team, a member of the Board of Director’s finance committee, and a staff financial advisor to the Board of Directors. The controller will supervise an accountant and AP/AR employee.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities:

  • Lead all aspects of finance and accounting functions of Butterfly Pavilion.
  • Lead capital campaign finance oversight and proforma creation.
  • Lead and ensure accurate and timely reporting of financial condition and results, for both external and internal use.
  • Provide interpretation of financial results for senior leadership and the Board of Directors.
  • Establish and ensure compliance with internal controls which safeguard the assets of Butterfly Pavilion and contribute to accurate reporting.
  • Supervise and support the daily operation of the accounting department, including revenue accounting, accounts payable, payroll, benefit payments, and cash flow management.
  • Manage annual operating and capital budget processes and report monthly on the operating budget performance.
  • Help create and lead strategy and selection of financial vehicles for capital campaign and bridge financing.
  • Develop and maintain written accounting policies and procedures.
  • Manage external audits.
  • Prepare financial presentation for Board meetings and present to Finance Committee and Board of Directors
  • Provide financial information and reports as needed for grant applications and reports.
  • Lead annual Scientific Cultural Facilities District (SCFD) qualification efforts and support certification through data evaluation and application.
  • Manage and maintain all daily Point of Sale reconciliations.
  • Prepare and file monthly state, local, and city, sales and use tax.
  • Develop recommendations to strategically advance financial performance and new business opportunities.
  • Develop and institute financial models for future organizational performance.
  • Support strong relationship with executives and senior leadership team as to identify needs, provide financial guidance and seek full range of business solutions.
  • Analyze, interpret, and communicate financial operations and capital campaign performance to provide information, guidance to CEO, Finance Committee, and BOD.
  • Evaluate future POS, Accounting and CRM systems and lead strategy for change over processes across organization.
  • Lead IT oversight, ensuring the facility technological requirements are in place and work with each other.
  • Lead and support all organizational compliance with local, regional, and national entities.

Qualifications/Experience:

  • 8+ years of experience in a financial leadership position
  • CPA or MBA/equivalent training and experience preferred
  • Strong written, verbal, and analytical skills
  • Ability to work independently and to manage multiple assignments and deadlines
  • Skilled in use of a variety of computer applications including word processing, spreadsheets, and database management
  • Experience in developing and leading annual organizational budget efforts
  • Experience in developing strategic and financial plans, policies and procedures to support organizational growth
  • Demonstrated achievement and leadership in performance modeling and modeling partnership programming
  • Experience in leading debt modeling and bridge financing scenarios for capital projects and campaigns
  • Ability to build working relationships throughout the organization
