Position Purpose

The Development and Advancement Manager will be tasked with creating and executing fundraising strategies for Museo de las Americas. This role will collaborate closely with the Board of Directors and the Executive Director to carry out all fundraising initiatives. The main duties and responsibilities will include: raising both operating and capital funds through soliciting major gifts, being responsible for fostering positive relationships with individual donors and corporate contributors, and contributing to board development and engagement.

Primary Functions:


  • Provide innovative, visionary and strategic operational planning and leadership for all museum development activities.
  • Manage and coordinate with the Board of Directors. In collaboration with the Director, be an effective partner with the Board of Trustees to help achieve fundraising development goals and keep them informed with regular reports on development progress, challenges in meeting goals, data analysis and projections and stories of donor giving.
  • Be a passionate, visible and informed advocate for Museo and serve as one of its key spokespersons, actively seeking opportunities to engage with the broader community and to participate in events that position the museum for improved fundraising or visibility.

Fundraising & Stewardship

  • Plan and execute strategies of all aspects of fundraising aligned with the Museo’s Strategic Planning. 
  • Identify, cultivate and successfully solicit major gifts from a diverse group of individuals and corporations. Ensure high-quality and appropriate stewardship of donors at all gift levels.
  • Facilitate the myriad of tasks that must be undertaken to advance the work and progress of the Museo, including preparing materials and information that will be used in meetings with prospective donors.
  • Develop and execute two annual fundraising events related to donor cultivation.
  • Supervise donor and gift acknowledgement, record-keeping and report requirements.
  • Work with museum’s senior staff and Board to develop and manage marketing & public relations programs.
  • Ready the museum for future campaigns.

Planning and Management

  • Align development department activities by creating an ambitious, comprehensive, written annual development plan and calendar with clearly defined goals, objectives, timelines and assignment of responsibilities.
  • Create, manage and monitor an annual development program budget and track progress through monthly and annual reports.
  • Oversee and evaluate all processes and procedures related to prospect identification, donor engagement, stewardship activities, and contributions management.
  • Oversee a transition to a new donor technology platform, vetting policies and procedures for entering data, moves management, contact notes and reports.
  • Coordinate and send all individual donor correspondence and acknowledgements.
  • Work closely with Programs & Interpretation Manager and Communications & Media Manager to develop marketing strategies for programmatic fundraising efforts and campaigns.

Necessary Skills:

  • A professional fundraiser with direct major gift and corporate sponsorship responsibility; prior capital campaign experience is especially desirable.
  • A team-oriented manager of the solicitation and cultivation process with strong organizational skills.
  • A strategic thinker who has demonstrated resourcefulness in working collaboratively with many constituencies.
  • An individual who consistently demonstrates discretion and a professional positive attitude with all people. 
  • The position will require working some evenings and weekends related to museum cultivation efforts and fundraising events.
  • Strong knowledge of museum best practices, services, and programing.
  • Bilingual (Spanish) is a plus, but not required.

The Development and Advancement Manager is expected to have a minimum of three years of professional experience in nonprofit fundraising. A graduate degree in nonprofit management or closely related field.
