Director of Preservation Resources

Histórico Denver / Molly Brown House Museum

Denver
Full Time
Posted October 16, 2020

Historic Denver, Inc. seeks a strategic thinker and self-motivated individual for the full-time position of Director of Preservation Resources.  The Director of Preservation Resources will play an integral role in implementing the organization’s advocacy agenda, providing resource information to owners of historic properties, managing existing technical preservation programs, and communicating the benefits of preservation to policy-makers and community members.

Organization Background

Founded in 1970, Historic Denver has been a leader in the preservation movement for fifty years, with numerous notable achievements. The organization’s mission is to empower people to actively experience and thoughtfully maintain our city’s historic places today and long into the future. Historic Denver achieves its mission through a set of core programs centered in education, advocacy, and direct preservation.

Education programs include events, walking tours, forums, trainings and outreach. Chief among the organization’s programs is the Molly Brown House Museum, the organization’s first “save” and a carefully preserved 1889 home that provides interpretation and engagement related to women’s history, social history, and preservation.

Historic Denver also has a strong reputation as a thoughtful and creative advocate for historic places, and as a resource for solving challenging preservation dilemmas. Advocacy is conducted through the Action Fund, which provides financial and technical support to community groups seeking preservation outcomes, through support for local designations and historic districts, through negotiations with property owners and local officials, and through efforts to encourage preservation-friendly land use policies.

Direct preservation services include a robust grant-management program to support owners of historic properties with rehabilitation work, and an easement program that protects over 60 structures. To learn more, visit www.historicdenver.org.

  • Implement the 50th Anniversary advocacy campaign, seeking 50 places worthy of recognition and preservation action in the future and reflective of the diversity in the city’s history
  • Work with the Executive Director as an advocate for preservation in municipal planning efforts, redevelopment projects involving historic properties, and in responding to demolition notices
  • Attend hearings and legislative sessions as needed
  • Serve as an organizational spokesperson on advocacy matters as needed
  • Build and maintain relationships with policy makers, including elected officials
  • Provide regular preservation content for organizational communications, including newsletters and electronic publications

  • Knowledge of historic preservation values, techniques and resources
  • Strong communication skills, including extensive written and verbal communications
  • Past work in a political environment, including interaction with elected officials
  • Comfort with public speaking
  • Ability to work effectively with a team and meet deadlines
  • Flexibility and ability to respond to urgent issues
  • Strong organizational skills
