Job Summary:  This role creates, manages, and implements a variety of programs for adults and other audiences offered through the Gardens’ School of Botanical Art & Illustration, including, but not limited to, classes, events, workshops, lectures, tours, group travel, and other educational experiences, whether delivered in-person or via a remote learning environment. Works with teaching artists and other instructors to deliver program content that fosters understanding of scientific illustration as well as of broader arts media to connect to the natural world through art. Highlighted media in the curriculum include graphite, pen/ink, colored pencil, watercolor, and graphite.

Education/Experience:  Two years related experience in a museum or university setting, Bachelor’s degree or higher from four-year college or university with concentration in scientific illustration, natural sciences, art, botany, education, art history, museum studies, or related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Terminal degree (MFA or PhD) preferred. Knowledge of botany and botanical subjects required. Understanding of and demonstrated ability in visual art and art history. Familiarity with exhibition development and book publishing desired.

Essential Job Duties:

  • Plans, develops, implements and evaluates quality class programs and curricula for new and existing adult programs that complement the vision and mission Denver Botanic Gardens to meet revenue and engagement aims.
  • Creates offerings to foster student advancement through the illustration certificate and diploma programs.
  • Identify and recruit instructors and teaching artists for the program.
  • Develop and implement a variety of outreach programs to serve aging adults and other special needs groups.
  • Coordinates speakers for special programs and master classes.
  • Organizes international collaborations and teaching/special program opportunities.
  • Acts as liaison to various artists to support the Gardens’ publishing efforts, ranging from newsletter content to exhibition catalogues and formal book projects to signage.
  • Facilitates student capstone portfolio preparation and review.
  • Evaluates program and individual class success and makes changes as necessary.
  • Evaluates course instructors and course content; facilitates portfolio reviews of graduate candidates.
  • Manages program budget and identifies potential outside funding sources for activities and aims.
  • Monitors student attendance and required prerequisites for courses and for graduation.
  • Works across departments with partners in horticulture, research, library and more to achieve communication and work aims.
  • Establishes and maintains collaborative relationships with relevant organizations.
  • Oversees the SBAI illustrator/artist in residence program.
  • Plans and leads national and international travel tours to support the School and student learning.

Other Job Duties:

  • Supervises volunteers and teacher assistants.
  • In conjunction with Marketing Department develop related print and electronic material for the program, including course catalog.
  • Fosters relationships with professional, scientific and artistic organizations and identify new strategic partnerships.
  • Keeps abreast of trends in botanical illustration, adult learning and related fields, applies appropriate changes.
  • Works with all departments to assure highest quality experience for all DBG visitors.
  • Maintains excellent working relationships with managers, co-workers and others.
  • Maintains a positive, helpful and solution-oriented demeanor when responding to or serving members and visitors.
  • Performs other duties as requested by management.
