We are looking for a guitar instructor who would be available to teach beginning classes for up to 10 youths or adults in a classroom setting beginning in September. Our classes are programmed quarterly with current classes on Saturday mornings (10:15 AM – 12:30 PM). Classes are held in our studio at the Aurora Public Library Central Location.

PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Instructor must be able to understand and teach musical notations, basic symbols, music theory.
  • Must have an ability to teach acoustic guitar fi nger positions, chords, and strumming.
  • Prepare and deliver quality training sessions, assess student’s skill levels, monitor student progress, and provide motivation when needed.
  • Demonstrate good ergonomics and practices to help students learn how to play without fatigue or injury.
  • Must be able to manage a classroom of young students while monitoring skill levels of each student.
  • Timely and clear verbal and written communication skills are required. Communication with parents and students is needed regarding student progress and behavior. Communication with library and cultural support staff is required regarding classroom space, class supply needs and class scheduling.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & WORKING CONDITIONS
An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.

Education:

  • High school diploma is required.

Experience:

  • 1-2 years teaching guitar lessons in a classroom setting.

Knowledge:

  • Must be able to teach and design a guitar course.
  • Must be able to adapt teaching style to various skill and ability levels.
  • Ability to read music, understand symbols, notations, and musical language.
  • Ability to be patient with students.
  • Must be able to communicate in English.

Skills:

  • Strong interpersonal and classroom managerial skills
  • Skill with guitars and guitar playing techniques
  • Strong communication skills
  • Must be able to structure class around customer requests.
  • Must be able to provide understandable feedback for student improvement.
  • Strong music theory skills
  • Ability to read music.

Abilities:

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with Cultural staff and students and parents.
  • Be able to set up chairs and classroom alone with max weight of 20 pounds.
  • Be able to advise Cultural staff on supplies and/or materials needed for class.
  • Creatively solve problems, negotiate and handle stressful situations in a positive manner.
  • Licenses and Certifications Required: NA

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Be able to set up room before class and then take down after class.
  • Be able to stand and move around for 1-2 hours.
  • Be able to work without other staff present.

Physical Demands:

  • Light work that involves moving no more than 20 pounds at a time.
  • Set up and take down requires some bending and lifting of up to 20lbs.

Work Environment:

  • All classes are held in the Cultural Services Studio at Aurora Public Library Central Location
  • Possibility of expansion to additional locations per space availability, student demand and instructor availability.
