We are looking for a keyboard instructor who would be available to teach beginning keyboard classes for up to 10 youths or adults in a classroom setting. Our classes are programmed quarterly with current classes on Tuesday evenings (4:30 PM – 8:30 PM). Classes are held in our studio at the Aurora Public Library Central Location.
PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Instructor must be able to understand and teach musical notations, basic symbols, music theory
  • Must have an ability to teach how to play electronic keyboards and their multiple functions and accessories
  • Prepare and deliver quality training sessions, assessing student’s skill levels, monitoring student progress and providing motivation when needed
  • Demonstrate good ergonomics and practices to help students learn how to play without fatigue or injury
  • Must be able to manage a classroom of young students while monitoring skill levels of each student
  • Timely and clear verbal and written communication skills are required
  • Communication with parents and students is needed regarding student progress and behavior
  • Communication with library and cultural support staff is required regarding class, classroom space, and class supply needs.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & WORKING CONDITIONS

An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.
Education: High school diploma is required.
Experience: 1-2 years teaching piano or electronic keyboard in a classroom setting.
Knowledge:

  • Must be able to teach and design an electronic keyboard course.
  • Must be able to adapt teaching style to various skill and ability levels.
  • Ability to read music, understand symbols, notations, and musical language.
  • Ability to be patient with students.
  • Must be able to communicate in English.

Skills:

  • Strong interpersonal and classroom managerial skills
  • Skill with piano and electronic keyboard playing techniques
  • Strong communication skills
  • Must be able to structure class around customer requests.
  • Must be able to provide understandable feedback for student improvement.
  • Strong music theory skills
  • Ability to read music.

Abilities:

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with Cultural staff and students and parents.
  • Be able to set up keyboards, stands, stools alone with max weight of 20 pounds.
  • Be able to advise Cultural staff on supplies and/or materials needed for class.
  • Creatively solve problems, negotiate and handle stressful situations in a positive manner.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Be able to set up room before class and then take down after class.
  • Be able to stand and move around for 1-2 hours.
  • Be able to work without other staff present.

Physical Demands:

  • Lightwork that involves moving no more than 20 pounds at a time.
  • Set up and take down requires some bending and lifting of up to 20lbs.

Work Environment: All classes are held in the Cultural Services Studio at Aurora Public Library Central Location
