Job Summary
Washington Heights Arts Center is seeking Instructors to teach adult ceramics courses, as well as
ceramic studio assistance. We will consider candidates seeking solely instructional work, solely
studio work, or ideally, a combination of both.
We are seeking qualified ceramic instructors, with the skill sets to handle a variety of beginning – advanced topics for a diverse adult audience. Expertise in areas such as Hand-Building &
Sculptural work, Glazing & Decorating and Intermediate-Advanced topic-based courses preferred.
Candidates should be proficiently trained in hand-building and throwing methods, as well as glazing
and firing techniques and invested in several years of teaching adult populations 18+, in a
community arts setting.
Studio assistance will include a variety of tasks, including but not limited to: Loading and unloading
kilns, assisting with electric and gas firings, assisting with glaze production and general cleaning
and maintenance of the pottery studios. Hours vary and are dependent of level of student
production.

Our ideal candidate is invested in sharing their passion for ceramic arts, are self-motivated, well
organized, and punctual. We are a small staff, with a dedicated student body, so collaboration and
investment in community are key. Available instructional opportunities will be presented during the
interview process.

Depending on schedules, Instructional hours may not begin until mid-summer or
early Fall, Studio hours could start immediately. Ideally, this will be an ongoing employment
opportunity.

The City of Lakewood is currently recruiting variable employees for this position. A variable
employee is an at-will employee who works in a seasonal or temporary capacity. Their work
schedule is based on business need. This position would be a part-time non benefitted position.

MAJOR TASKS, DUTIES, AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Essential Job Functions:
Instruct, encourage and lead class that fosters positive self-expression and builds self- esteem and
personal growth;
Create lesson plans that are exciting and educational for our students to partake in; Set up
classroom and return space to neat state upon completion of class;
Create a fun and welcoming atmosphere for our students;
Ability to instructor adult learners at multiple levels of abilities in one class;
To monitor and maintain ceramic studio operations.
Report injuries and complete required forms;
Immediately notify supervisor of broken equipment or any unsafe conditions;
To be aware of, and strictly follow, all health and safety protocols, including those related to COVID19;
Attend all required staff/planning meetings;
Other related duties as assigned.

Hours of Work:
Hours will vary based upon studio needs and quantity of courses taught and may vary season to
season. Will likely start around 5-15 hours a week, with the potential to grow over time. Instructional
hours include options Mondays through Fridays, between 9:00am and 9:30pm, and Saturdays and
Sundays 10am through 4pm.
Organizational Relationships
Supervision Received:
Receives supervision from Cultural Programs Coordinator.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS:
Licensure/Certification/Registration
A valid CPR/AED certificate is preferred by start of employment. Options are be available to certify
after employment.

Experience
2+ years of experience teaching adults in a community arts setting is desired.

Education
A 2 or 4-year degree in Fine Arts, specializing in Ceramics.
3-5 years of experience as an instructor or teaching artist may be used in lieu of a degree

Ability to work with students aged 16 and up;
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees, participants,
parents and caregivers;
Ability to develop engaging and inclusive curriculum;
Experience leading recreation programs/activities;
Experience leading or assisting groups of varying sizes;
Effectively support students of all skill and ability levels;
Ability to motivate and inspire students to thrive in groups and on their own; Have good classroom
management;
Have an understanding of classroom supply safety; Have good communication skills;
Have good organizational skills;
Have dedication and passion for ceramics and visual arts; Background check is required.
Physical Requirements
Lifting and Carrying
Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds, using assistance as needed.
Body Positions
Will be standing, stooping, kneeling, and reaching to perform tasks. May be moving about building
and outside spaces.
Vision
Use vision to perform instructional & studio functions, work with written documents and read.
Remembering
Must remember basic classroom instructions, scheduling and ability to become familiar with City
and Community Resources policies and procedures.
Language Ability
Must communicate verbally, and in writing with citizens and staff at all levels of the organization.
Reasoning
Must be able to take direction and follow instruction from supervisor.

Work Environment
Work is performed in an indoor or outdoor classroom setting.
Frequent contact with citizens, staff and others.
