Position Summary: The Target Species Manager spends a minimum of 40 hours per week fulfilling the research and conservation goals at Butterfly Pavilion, working in close cooperation with the Director of Research & Conservation, VP for Science, Conservation, and Operations, Environmental and Ecological Services, Horticulture, and Curatorial Departments. Much of that work will involve conservation and research focused on bee keeping and conservation at Butterfly Pavilion and in the field, including international field sites.
Essential Functions & Responsibilities:
- Provide active, self-motivated participation in Butterfly Pavilion’s research and conservation goals.
- Conduct work on bee conservation and bee keeping projects, developing and implementing project plans, including field work at international locations (i.e., requires international travel).
- In general, assist with Butterfly Pavilion Research and Conservation and Environmental and Ecological Services projects including project design, permitting, fieldwork, data collection and analysis, specimen preservation, specimen identification, GIS mapping, and report writing. This may also require coordinating overnight travel, including scheduling lodging and transportation.
- Regularly communicate with external partners about Research and Conservation projects.
- Manage Butterfly Pavilion’s honey bee hives, including hive maintenance and overseeing the annual honey harvest.
- Assist and/or lead research and conservation efforts for priority target species.
- Assist with additional research and conservation projects as needed.
- Assist the Marketing and Education Departments with scientific outreach, including interviews, articles, blogs, fact checking, adult programs, etc.
- Assist with publications and reports on research findings, including conducting data analyses and manuscript drafting and editing.
- Provide logistical, technical, and administrative support to Conservation and Curatorial staff working on research and conservation projects.
- Assists in managing the Research and Conservation Department while the Director of Research and Conservation is away from the office.
- Oversee seasonal Research and Conservation technicians, interns and volunteers, including writing job positions, interviewing, hiring, and managing.
- Assist with fundraising for conservation and research projects, especially drafting grant proposals and soliciting donations.
- Upholds AZA standards and follows, as well as updates, Butterfly Pavilion animal policies.
- Effectively communicate with direct supervisors, direct reports, and other members of the organization, to support the overall needs of the department and the organization.
- Engage visitors and constituents as needed.
- Work collaboratively with staff and volunteers, problem solve and communicate within the team and when working with other teams or departments.
- Ability to work with minimal direct, day-to-day oversight.
- Oversees research and conservation specialists, coordinators, field technicians, interns, and volunteers as necessary.

- A Bachelor’s degree in biology, environmental sciences, conservation or related fields; an advanced degree (Master’s or Ph.D.) desirable.
- At least 5 years of experience with bee keeping, ideally with some experience teaching others to keep bees.
- Interest and at least 3 years of experience in invertebrate research and conservation
- Basic computer skills (word processing, spreadsheets) Microsoft Suite
- Knowledge of basic statistics
- Scientific Writing experience
- Willingness to handle animals (all training provided onsite)
- Criminal background check
- Required attendance at monthly all staff, branch and department meetings and additional trainings and Butterfly Pavilion functions as designated essential by department and/or organizational need.
- Employee must follow all non-negotiables, check email and phone messages regularly, report injuries within 24 hours, and alerts immediate supervisor and necessary team staff when calling in from work.
- Additional duties based on organizational priorities and as assigned by the Director of Research and Conservation.
Work Environment / Physical Requirements:

- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to high humidity, intense sunlight, heat, cold, wind, precipitation, and uneven surfaces. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts and vehicles. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud. The employee will be exposed to salt water, aquarium maintenance chemicals, shellfish (living and dead) and chemicals (bleach, vinegar, ammonia, etc.). This employee will also be exposed to and may work regularly with venomous and non-venomous invertebrates. This employee will work in a laboratory environment as well as outside for bee keeping and the collection of specimens.
- These physical demands are representative of the physical requirements necessary for an employee to successfully perform the essential functions within this position. - While performing the responsibilities of this job, the employee is required to talk and hear. The employee is often required to: sit, stand, use hands and fingers to handle or feel, walk, reach with arms and hands, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl and lift (the employee must be able to lift 50lbs). This employee must handle a variety of invertebrate animals, some being venomous and fast moving. Vision abilities required by this job include close vision and regular use of a microscope. The Target Species Manager may have to occasionally run small machinery. This position will also be required to collect invertebrates in the field using various collection methods (aerial net, sweep net, pit fall trap, light trap, etc.)
- Employee must have an up to date Tetanus vaccination.

Compensation: $55,000 - 60,000
