Reports to: Environmental and Ecological Services (EES) Biology Manager

FLSA: Temporary, Non-Exempt, Full-Time, 40 hours per week

Commitment: This position is full-time temporary position that is expected to run through the end of 2025. Required attendance at monthly all staff, branch and department meetings and additional trainings and Butterfly Pavilion functions as designated essential by department and/or organizational need.

Hourly Rate: $18.00 – $21/hour

Position Summary: Butterfly Pavilion is currently seeking a creative, highly motivated, and energetic individual to assist in field work, bee keeping, invertebrate collection and preservation, invertebrate and plant identification, and report writing as part of a team of talented and experienced staff, interns, and volunteers. The EES Entomology Technician spends 40 hours/week fulfilling the environmental and ecological goals at Butterfly Pavilion, working in close cooperation with the EES Manager, Director of EES, Science and Conservation, and Horticulture teams. Work duties will include beekeeping, invertebrate specimen collection (in the field), processing, and identification.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities:

  • Provide active, self-motivated participation in Butterfly Pavilion’s EES department.
  • Conduct entomological field and lab work, primarily specimen collection, processing, and identification.
  • Assist EES team in plant identification in the field.
  • Assist in data management and analyses.
  • Assist in reports and scientific publications.
  • Support in beekeeping-this position will require the selected individual to support beekeeping duties, such as hive checks, moving bees, honey pulls and communicating with beehive renters.
  • Uphold AZA accreditation standards.
  • Comply with USDA containment standards.
  • Maintain a clean working environment.

Required Minimum Qualifications/Experience:

  • 1-2 years’ experience in field work, invertebrate, and plant identification. College level classes will count towards experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree in ecology, or related fields (e.g. biology, forestry, botany, entomology), advanced degree is a plus.
  • Experience collecting, preserving, and identifying invertebrates using taxonomic keys.
  • Ability and desire to learn how to identify Colorado plants in the field.
  • Ability to work outdoors under a range of conditions, including steep terrain and hot or cold or other uncomfortable weather, biting or stinging insects, and wild.
  • Enthusiasm to learn new concepts, field skills, and lab skills.
  • Ability to work productively in a collaborative team.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Valid driver’s license and personal vehicle

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Beekeeping experience
  • Experience with Microsoft Excel
  • Experience conducting field or independent research.
  • Experience with plant identification, especially in Colorado.
  • Experience working in a field team.
  • Experience using statistical software such as R, GIS, PISCES and SYSTAT.
