Aurora History Museum Collections Intern

The Aurora History Museum & Historic Sites is seeking a dedicated individual for a collections management volunteer term. This internship provides a unique opportunity to engage in hands-on collections management through database work with the collections management software program, PastPerfect, collections handling, and object research by assisting with a collections move. This specific project will be working closely with the Curator of Collections to inventory, label, rehouse, and move the museum’s oversized collections, consisting mostly of furniture.
The ideal candidate will be enrolled in a museum studies (or related field) graduate or undergraduate program or will have recently graduated from a program and is seeking additional, hands-on experience. At the completion of the internship, the candidate will present on the work they accomplished and any new skills or knowledge they learned throughout their time working on the project.
To support your commitment, the City has secured grant funding that will provide a stipend to the chosen candidate, on condition of fulfilling the grant requirements. The grant requirement for receiving the stipend is satisfactory completion of the internship inventory project as defined by the Curator of Collections. A total stipend of $3,000 is available to help cover potential living or educational expenses. The stipend will be issued in two parts: $1,500 stipend at the project’s halfway point, as defined by the Curator of Collections, and another $1,500 stipend issued upon successful completion, as defined by the Curator of Collections.
Examples of Duties:
- Identify objects housed in the collections storage area
- Update existing catalog records in PastPerfect
- Create new records in PastPerfect
- Tag objects with clear, concise, legible tags
- Basic condition reporting
- Lifting and carrying objects as a team, weighing up to 50 lbs.
General Qualifications:
- Enrolled in or recently graduated from an undergraduate or graduate program in museum studies, or a related field is required
- Experience working in museum collections required
- Experience working with museum collections management software preferred
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, including spelling and typing accuracy
- Ability to follow policy and procedures/protocols – Ability to take direction and work independently
- Strong communication skills
