Definition:
Under the supervision of the Curator of Education, Gallery Teachers at the Longmont Museum serve as an enthusiastic, welcoming, and approachable presence in the Dream Lab exhibit at Lila’s Children’s Gallery and throughout the Museum. They promote play-based informal education through a child-driven educational approach where children explore, experiment, and solve problems through purposeful play, fostering cognitive, social-emotional, and physical skills. Gallery Teachers lead adults and children in educational play-based activities, provide general information about exhibitions, programs, and the Museum collection, and maintain a safe environment for visitors and exhibitions. In addition to gallery-based duties, Gallery Teachers may assist with Education programs such as birthday parties and fieldtrips and fill in for brief periods to support early childhood education programs. This is a part-time position, working during Museum open hours, including some night and weekend hours.
Principal Duties:
- Be a performer of educational play.
- Greet guests with energy and warmth, jump into imaginative scenarios and facilitate playful interactions in exhibit spaces.
- Inspire children and adults by modeling curiosity, creativity and joy in every interaction.
- Assist in onboarding and mentoring new staff and volunteers as assigned.
- Maintain engaging, clean and safe environments so exhibits always feel welcoming and ready for exploration.
- Open, reset, and close exhibit spaces, including restocking and preparing materials, running the dishwasher and clothes washer/dryer.
- Regularly clean and sanitize exhibit, high-touch surfaces, tools, and play materials throughout the day, and rotate materials and interactives as needed.
- Follow established protocol for identifying and reporting exhibition damage in need of repair.
- Oversee and maintain education interactive carts.
- Conduct surveys and evaluation as requested.
- Actively listen to and address guest feedback and work to enhance the guest experience.
- Maintain knowledge of current Museum programming, events and exhibit schedules to share with guests.
- Facilitate playful programming within the Museum, including birthday parties and field trips.
- Attend and participate in staff meetings and/or trainings as assigned.
- Performs essential duties and additional tasks in a manner which enhances City Attributes.
Working Environment:
Work is generally performed in children’s museum environment. Expect the joyful noise of children and families exploring a stimulating environment. Use of technical office equipment including personal computer and telephones. Ability to move 15 -30 pounds. May be required to work long or non-traditional hours to fulfill organizational needs, projects, or special circumstances. Exposure to frequent interruptions. This position requires long periods of walking and standing with intermittent sitting.
Qualifications:
Minimum of 18 years of age. Comfortable performing, singing, improvising and being “on” in front of families and large groups. Interest, enthusiasm, and experience working with children and families (formally or informally). Knowledge of early childhood education, intergenerational education, and/or informal education best practices. Ability to work effectively and accurately in a fast-paced environment while maintaining excellent guest service. High energy and enthusiasm for facilitating interactive experiences.
Special Qualifications: Bilingual in English/Spanish preferred.
Compensation: $18.60 / hour
