Over the last 22 years, Growing Gardens has brought gardening, nutrition education and produce donations to over 162,000 Boulder County residents.


We offer a variety of programs to get people of all ages, backgrounds, income levels, and abilities involved in growing and cooking their own food. These educational opportunities are paired with seed, plant start, and produce donations, as well as gardening space, to impart greater food security and hunger relief in our community.


The Growing Gardens Operations Manager plays an important role in developing, implementing and reviewing operational policies and procedures. The Operations Manager oversees management of financial, registration and database systems and works with other staff to provide high quality programs for the community.


Job Title: Operations Manager

Job Status: Salaried position is an average of 40 hours a week (hours do change seasonally and can go up to 45+ hours before events)

Reports to: Executive Director

Pay: $40,000- $45,000 annually, depending on experience

Overview of Operations Manager Job Responsibilities:


  • Oversees business operational systems, processes, and infrastructure while looking for opportunities for improvement or revision
  • Maintains all business licenses, insurance policies and other required business paperwork
  • Manages day to day financial transactions of the organization
  • Manages registration system and donor database for the organization
  • Establishes and maintains credible, professional relationships with clients, participants, and external vendors
  • Supports IT systems within the organization
  • Supports HR tasks, including hiring and onboarding new staff and interns
  • Effectively manages Administrative Assistant, interns and volunteers
  • Manages the Community Garden Program
  • Provides logistical support for Growing Gardens events, and contributes to overall fundraising initiatives
  • Collaborates with other team members to ensure seamless business execution, reinforce positive morale, and uphold organization values



Operations Manager Required Qualifications and Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • 3 years’ experience in Operations Management position
  • 2 years’ experience in general finance and budgeting, familiarity with QuickBooks is preferred
  • Excellent communication and conflict resolutions skills
  • Excellent computer skills over a wide variety of platforms
  • Excellent accuracy and attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines
  • Ability to organize and prioritize short and long term tasks and projects in a fast paced environment
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively with a small staff
  • Good decision-making skills and response to high-pressure situations


Operations Manager Specific Job Details:

Operational Policies, Procedures and Projects

  • Develop, implement and review organization policies and procedures
  • Ensure all legal and regulatory documents are filed and monitor compliance with laws and regulations
  • Apply for temporary licenses needed for special events
  • Compile and track all required tax forms, background check and trainings for staff for compliance with org policies and Childcare License
  • Assist with hiring and onboarding new hires (staff and interns)
  • Support staff IT needs in the organization and connect our IT company with staff when there are problems
  • Work with marketing team to execute end of year winter appeal bulk mailing


Financial Management

  • Maintain required files throughout the year and pull needed reports for annual financial audit
  • Review and approve invoices and ensure they are submitted for payment
  • Review all monthly employee credit card, mileage and reimbursement reports
  • Prepare invoices and bills each month for bookkeeper
  • Make bank deposits, code appropriately in accordance with budget and enter into QuickBooks
  • Track vendor pricing, rebates and service levels
  • Oversee financial components of events, including setting up iPads and cash registers to collect money at events and programs


Manage Registration System and Donor Database (DonorView) with help of Admin Assistant

  • Input new donors into DonorView and ensure thank you letters are completed by Admin Assistant in a timely manner
  • Create registration forms in DonorView for classes, camps and programs
  • Manage registration process for Growing Gardens programs, classes and events


Customer service

  • Oversee Administrative Assistant to respond in a timely and professional manner to incoming phone, email and in person
  • Communicate customer issues with leadership team and devise ways of improving the customer experience, including resolving problems and complaints
  • Manage relationships with key operations vendors



Management of Staff, Interns and Volunteers

  • Recruit, train and maintain close communication with Garden Leaders (volunteers who help manage day to day operations at our 9 community gardens)
  • Hire, train and meet weekly with Administrative Assistant to accomplish goals of Operations team
  • Hire, train and meet weekly with seasonal Operations Intern (3 per year) to accomplish goals of Operations team
  • Manages the Community Garden Program, which involves coordinating and training a team of Garden Leaders, onboarding new gardeners to the program, and providing support for current program participants
