Commitment: 

  • This Summer Internship runs from August 11th, 2026 – December 4th, 2026 
  • Must complete 180 hours over the course of the internship, typically following a schedule of 12-15 hours per week  
  • Must be available for orientation at Butterfly Pavilion in Westminster, Colorado on August 11th, 2026 
  • Must be available for presentation of project at Butterfly Pavilion in Westminster, Colorado on December 2nd, 2026  

Stipend: Unpaid; school credit can be earned for this internship in most cases. 

Position Summary: 

The Social Media Internship at Butterfly Pavilion is an opportunity to develop real-world skills in social media planning and execution, creative and trending content development, and project management at a nonprofit achieving global impact in invertebrate research, conservation, and education. The intern will be responsible for developing content for social media to engage users and create a relationship between the community and Butterfly Pavilion’s mission. They will also be responsible for planning content calendars, drafting compelling captions, creating content through video and photo editing, and assisting the marketing team with other social campaigns. The Intern will report directly to the organization’s Marketing and Communications Coordinator and will have the opportunity to collaborate with individuals in multiple departments to achieve project goals. 

Key Skills Learned and Benefits Earned:

  • Experience developing and implementing creative social media content, managing social media calendars, and scheduling posts through Hootsuite.  
  • Technical skill in shooting and editing videos and photos for social media platforms.  
  • Understanding of content development for various platforms and audiences including Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, YouTube, and LinkedIn.  
  • Increased knowledge of marketing applications and technology.
  • Skills in professional communication, collaboration, and project management.  
  • Knowledge of the invertebrates we care for as well as the varying projects and events we conduct to run a world class non-profit organization. 

Responsibilities:

  • Develop visual and written content to promote animals, exhibits, upcoming public events and programs, and other initiatives across our primary social media channels, including Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, and YouTube.  
  • Work closely with the Marketing Department to film, edit, and publish video content that supports specific project goals and campaigns.  
  • Create engaging graphics for social media, including memes, promotional posts, and event marketing materials.  
  • Monitor and report on social media performance, providing recommendations to expand reach, increase engagement, and improve user satisfaction. 
  • Complete an intern project throughout the duration of the internship and present findings at the end of the term, including clear outcomes, recommendations, and thoughtful analysis. 
  • Perform other duties as assigned. 

Qualifications & Skills:

  • Creative mindset.
  • Driven, proactive, and resourceful team member.  
  • Efficiency in project and time management.  
  • Preference given to individuals currently pursuing or who have completed a bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, journalism, advertising, or related subject.  
  • Basic knowledge of videography and photography on a smartphone or camera. 
  • Proficiency in video or photo editing, using applications such as Canva, Adobe Premiere Pro, Adobe Illustrator, Davinci, etc. is a plus, but not required.  
  • Excellent writing and proofreading skills and familiarity with social media platforms.  
  • Knowledge or passion for animals and insects is a plus, but not required. 

Minimum Age Requirement: Applicants must be at least 18 years of age

At Butterfly Pavilion, the team member is occasionally exposed to moderate to loud environmental noise for extended periods of time. While performing the responsibilities of this position, the team member is required to talk and hear. The team member is often required to sit and stand, use their hands and fingers, to handle/feel/grasp. The team member is occasionally required to reach with arms and hands, climb or balance, and to stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. Vision abilities required by this job include close vision. The team member should be able to lift, carry and items up to 50 lbs.
